Recap of project day
|
On Tuesday, October 15th, the final LiT project day of the year took place, organized by Arnt Offringa (project leader for 'Lightweight composites and structures') at the Global Technology Center (GTC) of GKN Fokker in Hoogeveen. The day focused on fostering synergy and collaboration between the projects.
The day began with a tour of the GTC, the introduction of Jens, the new valorization broker, and the farewell to Louis Aartman, who will be completing his work at the project office at the end of October. Louis has enthusiastically contributed to the preparations and development of the LiT proposition for the Growth Fund through the LRN, and later helped shape the project office. A big thank you, Louis, and best of luck in your future endeavors!
During the working session, we strengthened existing collaborations and discovered surprising new synergies. These valuable insights will be further developed by the project leaders and the Project Office in the coming weeks.

Feedback on the General Assembly
|
On Thursday, October 3rd, we held our very first General Assembly, a milestone we had eagerly anticipated.
During this meeting, the project office, on behalf of the board, provided all members with a detailed update on the progress of LiT. We not only discussed the results achieved so far but also the milestones that lie ahead for the next 12 to 18 months.
It was fantastic to see that all partners from the consortia within our collaboration were present. Their participation highlights the strength of our collective effort towards climate-neutral aviation by 2050 and emphasizes how crucial the General Assembly is for strengthening our ecosystem. With the insights and ideas exchanged during this meeting, we confidently look forward to the next steps in LiT. Let’s seize the opportunities ahead and continue working towards a successful and sustainable future for all!

Make use of the Temporary Subsidy Scheme
|
|
|
There is still funding available for knowledge institutes and SMEs until December this year for aviation sector transitions. This applies to the Knowledge &
Test Vouchers and Feasibility Projects modules of the Luchtvaart in Transitie subsidy scheme.
Vouchers and feasibility projects
With the Knowledge & Test Vouchers module, we encourage SMEs to conduct research into, for example, new compositions of hydrogen fuel cells or smart, new aircraft structures. This can help extend the limited range of electric aircraft. The Feasibility Projects module provides grants to map out the technical and economic risks of an innovation project within the aviation sector. This could involve a literature review, market exploration, or industrial research.
Promising Research
The previous module, Promising Research, has now closed, and funding has been awarded to four projects. The following four projects have successfully received subsidies:
ARGUS (University of Twente): Development of adaptive winglets for aircraft with ‘morphing surfaces,’ achieved using advanced functional materials and an AI-driven control system.
Cool Pipe (University of Twente): Research into the behavior of two-phase cryogenic hydrogen flow for safe and efficient hydrogen propulsion in aircraft.
AEROFUSION (SAM|XL Foundation): Fundamental research into the principles of continuous ultrasonic welding of curved thermoplastic composite components for assembly.
IOHEVA (Eindhoven University of Technology): Research into an integrated design methodology for hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion systems.

Subsidy grants for Flying Vision Accelerator &
DASAL
|
At the moment, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) is finalizing the subsidy approvals for the projects FVA & DASAL.
Flying Vision will develop a roadmap for the entire transition process to climate-neutral aviation, considering not only technological aspects but also system challenges (such as energy demand) and the traveller’s perspective. It is led by TU Delft in collaboration with Airbus Netherlands and NLR, with contributions from KLM and the Schiphol Group. The Flying Vision Accelerator aims to involve broad participation from both the sector and beyond to address all aspects of the transition.
DASAL focuses on developing formulas and algorithms that are translated into simulation models. These models will be used to predict the effects of aviation innovations and policy choices. Additionally, a research infrastructure will be set up in which different models can be linked to map out integrated effects (covering not just aviation but also broader mobility, economic, and societal impacts). This project is led by NLR and carried out in collaboration with TU Delft.
